  • A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine shows that Vitamin D helps the treatment of neuropathic pain in diabetic patients.
  • Diabetes is a disease of greatest influence in English society. In recent years increased from 4.4% of the population to 5.3%. It is one of the most important diseases, especially in primary care.
Diabetes is characterized by high blood glucose, called hyperglycemia, and is caused by a deficiency of insulin secretion, resistance to it or both. Diabetic patients are classified into two groups, diabetes type 2 (85%) than are those who have a deficiency in the secretion of insulin and type 1 (15%) with insulin resistance and also secrete the pancreas does not produce an adequate compensatory response.
One of the most common complications of diabetes is diabetic neuropathy. Neuropathy means damage to the nerves that run throughout the body, connecting the spinal cord to muscles, skin, blood vessels and other organs.
Diabetic neuropathy can be painful and cause some kind of disability. Fortunately, severe forms of neuropathy do not occur often, and can reverse this complication. Some symptoms of neuropathy occur when nerve fibers are lost. If the loss of nerve fibers affecting the motor fibers can cause muscular weakness. If the loss of nerve fibers affects sensory fibers, can cause loss of sensitivity. And if it affects the autonomic fibers can cause loss of functions that are usually performed unconsciously, like digestion. Other common symptoms include itching, tingling, burning, aching or sharp needles. Most doctors say that people with neuropathy should do three things: achieve your ideal weight, follow a regular exercise program and control their glucose levels in the blood.
The study, conducted by specialists from New South Wales in 51 patients with diabetes, and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, has shown that vitamin D treatment can reduce symptoms. These patients often have Vitamin D deficiency and administration of this not only improve this deficiency, but also reduce pain and help prevent osteoporosis, very common in these patients.
should be noted that the administration of vitamin D has no side effect, which would be an added advantage to the treatment of pain.
The authors are calling for a comprehensive study on the administration of vitamin D because studies on treatment of neuropathic pain in diabetic patients are unsatisfactory.
is important to further investigate this new treatment for both pain and to prevent degradation bone. The researchers conclude by saying that vitamin D may be a potent analgesic. "
