EFE gastric bypass and diabetes after several diabetic patients have reduced glucose levels after undergoing this procedure. Doctors have observed that levels of sugar in the blood of patients who have undergone bariatric surgery have improved by up to 80% in some cases, but the reason is not entirely clear. Dr. Blandine
Laferrère center on obesity and nutrition research center at St. Luke-Roosevelt Hospital in New York published their findings in Science
Translational Medicine. And, although the weight loss is the greatest impact of gastric bypass the discovery of improved glycemic control
in type 2 diabetes, even before weight loss, suggests that the operation affects biochemical mechanisms related to hormonal changes.
The study results are preliminary, but could help researchers find new ways to treat diabetes, a disease that affects millions of people worldwide, particularly in the West, but has begun to spread in countries like China and India as well as on the African continent. To figure out how to develop drugs that mimic the effects of diabetes scavengers after surgery gastric bypass, scientists need to figure out why the diabetes disappeared in some cases.
One theory points to hormonal changes in the gut and in certain metabolic pathways that are activated after gastric bypass surgery, but remained inactive after losing weight through dieting.
The team observed two small groups of severely obese diabetic individuals who underwent gastric bypass surgery or strict diets. Both groups lost about 10 kilos and researchers say the exercise was not a factor in weight loss, as participants lead sedentary lives.
After analyzing a series of biochemical compounds involved in metabolic reactions, the team discovered that, unlike dieting, gastric bypass surgery leads to a drastic reduction in the levels of amino acids, which alter the metabolism of the individual, unlike of those who dieted.
High levels of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, are associated with obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance. The results highlight the potential link between reduced levels of circulating amino acids and the disappearance of diabetes.
"The most interesting finding of this study is that amino acids, including branched chain, decrease more after gastric bypass surgery after weight loss itself through dietary intervention," says Laferrère. More information: Lee
