Climate change threatens the health of children

Climate change threatens the health of children

One million children die each year worldwide before their fifth birthday. The vast majority of these deaths - 97% - occur in low or middle income, and disproportionately in communities and households. Most children are dying as a result of diseases and conditions such as malnutrition, pneumonia, measles, diarrhea, malaria, HIV and AIDS, and neonatal problems.

In this context, climate change was recently described as the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century. Affect the health of children in a variety of ways. Will increase the prevalence of mortality and more children and undermine the foundation of health, child survival: the functioning of education systems and empowering women, food security, clean water and sanitation, explains Lydia Baker officer in disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change Global Future magazine published by World Vision.
adds that no one is immune to the effects of climate change, children from poor families in low income and are at high risk. This is especially for children under five, who comprise between 10% and 20% of the total population estimated to be most affected by climate change.
Children in this age group often have less immunity to diseases and infections, are on additional risk. Diarrhea, for example, it kills about two million children under five annually. Lack of access to water and sanitation is responsible for about 90% of these deaths and, as climate change substantially reduces water availability, the number of cases of diarrhea are expected to rise between 2% and 10% for 2020, particularly in children under five years, the largest group that die as a result of diarrhea.

Nobody is immune, but the poorest children are at particular risk
Malnutrition is an underlying cause in the deaths of 3.2 million children each year on the planet, and 178 million children suffer. Some of the countries with the highest rate of malnutrition in the world are Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India and Vietnam are also expected to be some of the most affected by climate change in the future.
not only climate change affect food availability in some of the world's poorest countries, is expected to increase in food prices. This is particularly worrying for children from disadvantaged families poor, because access to food depends not only on their availability, also on the ability of families to buy. Poor families often spend up to 80% of their income on food, and yet this is insufficient to provide their children a healthy and nutritious diet. Severe weather events
Since the drought that is affecting about 25 million people in eastern Africa to storms and floods that hit Southeast Asia, the reality is that these events have an increasing cost on children . The percentage of the land mass of the planet that suffers from a severe drought has tripled in the last 10 years from 1% to 3%. And expected 8% in 2020, not less than 30% at the end of the century.
  • While research evidence linking climate change with infant mortality, children should not be viewed as victims but they face special risks that should be recognized in policies and programs to reduce the impact of climate change. The first step in addressing this challenge would be to ensure the quality of disaggregated information on the impacts of climate change on children. This will help to inform programs and policies to support and bring the issue into the consciousness of governments and the public. Second, while children are one of the largest groups at risk from climate change are also a leader in many countries that have an important role in adaptation and risk reduction activities. Such interventions should be expanded urgently to ensure that children themselves may be in the driver's seat of his own adaptation to climate change. As part of its mission, World Vision Mexico offers information on areas in which it operates, as well as direct contact with the staff working in these regions with the only request for acknowledgment. World Vision Mexico is part of the International Fellowship of World Vision, an organization founded in 1950 and currently has a presence in nearly 100 countries on three main lines: Development transformer; Promotion of justice and, prevention, emergency response and disaster rehabilitation and conflicts in the regions that need it, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender. This is what justifies our presence in countries like Indonesia, Iraq, Liberia, Chad and others.
