- Researchers at Columbia University in New York, and Duke, North Carolina, have shown that weight loss surgery can change the metabolism to the point of getting diabetes is gone, much more effective than when only thin through diet. According to the article published in the latest issue of the journal Science Translational Medicine ', to understand how the' bypass' gastric affects the metabolism may be key to developing new treatments for Type 2 diabetes, a global epidemic strongly associated with obesity and physical inactivity. Therefore, this study examined two small groups of severely obese diabetic patients who underwent a 'bypass' gastric or strict diets and in both cases, managed to lose about 9 kilos. The study took into account the metabolites, a food chemical byproducts in the body, noting that, unlike the diet, the surgery changes a person's metabolism significantly decreased levels of amino acids, traditionally linked to obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance.
"What we saw was a clear difference between bariatric surgery and nutritional intervention," said Professor Christopher Newgard, author of the research, since the surgery group patients had lower levels of amino acids. Specifically, these people operated had undergone an operation known as Roux-en-Y, in which doctors surgically reduce the size of the stomach to prevent patients from eating too much. Therefore, Newgard recognizes that it is not clear to what extent affect the reduction of the stomach to metabolic changes. However, he adds, the goal now is to develop drugs that can mimic this effect.
